How does it work exactly?
VigiMac contains only two little files.
The first one is a simple script shell that can be found in /Library/VigiMac/trace.sh
The script gets your Mac serial number thanks to the system_profiler command line.
If this information is unavailable, we identify your Mac with the last MAC address (actually it must be the Airport one).
Next, the serial is sent in a url variable to vigimac.com.
By sending this request, we can associate the public IP address with your Mac.
If you contact us because your Mac is stolen, we start to record the IP returned for this Mac.The second file is /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vigimac.plist
It is used by Launchd to execute the trace.sh script every two minutes.
Is it really free?
Yes, absolutely. You will not have to pay for anything (installation or recovery) but we accept donation.
As VigiMac is technically simple, we think that few ads and donations are enough to maintain this site.
Is it a spyware?
Of course not, there’s no spyware in VigiMac.
VigiMac has also been tested spyware free by Download.com
You can open the package with Pacifist, read the script with a text editor to be sure.
How can I uninstall VigiMac?
Just delete these two files :
/Library/VigiMac/trace.sh
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vigimac.plist
What about privacy?
The information collected after registration of your Mac are only useful for recovery and nothing else.
Note that you can register whenever you want. It is just more difficult to find a computer on the Net without knowing its serial number.
Can I customize the installation to better hide VigiMac?
This is a good idea.
You can move and rename /Library/VigiMac/trace.sh (in /usr/local/bin/ for example).
If you do so, you’ll need to edit /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vigimac.plist to change the path for the trace.sh script.
Is there any chance to use VigiMac on a previous version of MacOS X (10.3.x or older)?
It is possible.
Forget “com.vigimac.plist” and execute the scheduled command “trace.sh” with a tool like Cronnix.
